Counselling is a talking therapy that creates a facilitated space in which people can discuss their difficult feelings and the problems they encounter in a safe, confidential, non-judgemental environment.

Over time counselling has evolved into a variety of approaches. I integrate approaches to provide a rounded basis for the therapy I deliver. The foundation approach I use , called humanistic-existential, is one of the ones that focusses most on the how you are affected in the present. It sees the client as the expert on themself because no-one knows their own mind and deepest, most personal thoughts as well as they do. I pull on models and ideas that fit well together and bring them into our sessions as and when it appears suitable to do so. For example, when the material presented calls for it, I may bring in psycho-education and exercises from CBT. I'm doing this because through the hundreds of hours study and then the hundreds of hours practice I've done I'm keen to give a client the best, longest lasting affects in the shortest, least painful way possible.

As counsellor I act as the facilitator, holding the therapeutic space as a place for you to un-package and explore your thoughts and feelings. I am here to help you explore how you relate to the situation you find yourself in, what brought you there and your options for the future. In life we all have constraints we exist within. We explore what is in your power to change, what is not and uncover options, some of which you may not have realised were there.

Counselling is not a service where you are given advice but it will help you to identify what sources of guidance and additional practical help are available to you.

What can it do for me?

Counselling allows you a space to be real and to talk about the things that bother you deeply. It enables you to explore and express your feelings, even if you can't clearly name them. It helps you to understand why you do what you do and once you know this you have the choice over whether to change anything.

What to expect

Counselling is about opening up but also keeping yourself safe. At times you will have the choice between making small changes to help to change your circumstances and/or outlook or to stay the same.

You will be given the time you need. At times you may be asked to decide what tasks you can set yourself in-between sessions to help you to progress.

You may find that a way of doing things that worked for you in the past really isn’t working for you any more but you’re not sure what or how to change.

Or you may be feeling stuck, uncomfortable and fearful but are not really sure what that’s all about.

The frustration and stress of our modern time can take its toll.
You don’t have to wait until your life is spiralling out of control.
